THE wife of Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is improving after being diagnosed with the coronavirus, President Trump says.

had said he would be working from home as a precaution in wake of the news about wife Sophie.

Trump said he spoke with the PM on Saturday.

"Great to hear that his wonderful wife Sophie is doing very well," the president tweeted.

The United States and Canada will continue to coordinate closely together on COVID-19."

Trudeau had previously said that "I am in isolation as are my children and my wife is in quarantine."

The PM said doctors say he doesn't need to be tested for the virus because he doesn't have the dry cough and fever associated with it.

But the Canadian politician assured residents he would continue to work hard despite his 14-day isolation period.

"We seem to be approaching a different phase right now," he said during the outdoor meeting.

"We do not want any Canadian to have to worry about whether or not they're going to be able to pay their rent, whether or not they're going to be able to buy groceries, or care for their kids or elderly family members.

"The government of Canada will be introducing a significant fiscal stimulus package in the days ahead."

Before the press briefing, Trudeau shared a snapshot from inside his home which showed him hard at work.

"Busy day ahead, working from home," he wrote. "Meetings with my cabinet, the country’s premiers, national Indigenous leaders, and more. "Staying focused on you. Talk soon."

His wife, Sophie, began exhibiting "mild flu-like symptoms" before being diagnosed with on Thursday.

Mrs Grégoire Trudeau issued a statement thanking well-wishers as her husband continues with his political duties from their Rideau Cottage.

"Although I’m experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon," she said.

"Being in quarantine at home is nothing compared to other Canadian families who might be going through this and for those facing more serious health concerns.

"We will get through this situation together. Please share the facts and take your health seriously.

"I send you all my courage and warm thoughts (but only "get better" hugs from afar!)."

Trudeau had revealed he would be quarantining alongside Sophie on Thursday, just in case.

"Health professionals will reach out to those who have been in contact with Mrs. Gregoire Trudeau as they deem necessary," it stated.

"The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days.

"He will not be tested at this stage since he has no symptoms. For the same reason, doctors say there is no risk to those who have been in contact with him recently."

The statement noted Trudeau would be ready to "fully assume his duties"

Canada has nearly , with one death while the death toll in the US surged to 48 on Friday night.

While Trump issued a travel ban on 26 European countries, Canada's chief medical officer urged citizens to avoid all non-essential travel abroad.
