Witness Annabella Sciorra wrote in a statement: "My testimony was painful but necessary.

"I spoke for myself and with the strength of the eighty plus victims of Harvey Weinstein in my heart.

"While we hope for continued righteous outcomes that bring absolute justice, we can never regret breaking the silence.

"For in speaking truth to power we pave the way for a more just culture, free of the scourge of violence against women."

Women's rights attorney Gloria Allred trumpeted the verdict as a signal that "this is the age of the empowerment of women" in a statement made on the courtroom steps.

She also denounced Weinstein's dark legacy of attacks and intimidation of women.

Meanwhile, Soraya Chemaly wrote: "The solution is not putting perpetrators in jail or firing all harassers.

"Also how I feel. Weinstein's verdict will make many people say 'Now let's put this behind us,' but 'bad men' are not the problem.

"The culture is and that means changing everything."

Mira Sorvino wrote: "The beginning of Justice. More to come, my sisters."

"Our system so often silences survivors and delivers injustice, so we can’t let up in our fight to lift up survivors and hold predators who abuse their power fully accountable."

TV host Padma Lakshmi wrote: "Weinstein terrorized and attacked women for decades. Now he will sit in a prison cell where he belongs.

"Sending so much love, support and most of all gratitude to Annabella Sciorra and all of the women who came forward."

She added: "If there's a man who doesn't deserve bail, it's him."

However not everyone feels that justice has been served in full.

Comedian Kate Leth wrote: "I’m allowing myself to celebrate Weinstein’s conviction, despite it being 5% of what he should’ve faced, because catharsis just tastes good."

Activist Tarana Burke has been critical of the "incredibly narrow and unjust set of laws governing sexual assault" after Harvey Weinstein was acquitted of two counts of predatory sexual assault.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow was quick to remind people that this is only the beginning of the end for Weinstein.

He said: "Don’t forget- Harvey Weinstein faces four more charges in Los Angeles.

"This is just the beginning of holding him accountable."
