Jeremy Corbyn refuses to rule out staying in Labour’s shadow cabinet

JEREMY Corbyn could stay on in the Labour shadow cabinet even after leading the party into its worst election defeat in 80 years.

The disastrous Labour leader won't leave office for another month and has refused to rule out serving on the frontbench.

Mr Corbyn has said he would serve the party in whatever capacity he was asked to do, including in the shadow cabinet.

He said: "I'm happy to serve the party in any capacity because my whole life has been about making my contribution in Parliament."

Ms Long-Bailey, who is seen as the "continuity Corbyn" candidate, said she would ask the Labour leader to join her in the shadow cabinet despite the catastrophic defeat in the last election.

She said: "It's up to him, I love him so."

Deputy leader candidate Richard Burgon has said Mr Corbyn still had a "valuable role" to play.

He said: "If he was Shadow Foreign Secretary, that would be ideal."

Ms Long-Bailey is one of the final three candidates in the race for the Labour leadership, along with Sir Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy.

Registered members of the Labour party have until April 2 to cast their votes and the final leader will be announced on April 4, when Mr Corbyn will finally step down.
