A WOMAN of 69 died after being hit on the head with a rugby ball as she watched her grandson play.

Jennifer Selwood suffered a brain injury from the stray kick from an adjoining pitch.

The gran, of Taunton, Somerset, spent two weeks in a coma in Bristol’s Southmead hospital.

Her grandson Ellis Selwood was playing for the town’s club under-11s.

Daughter Clare Rossiter said: “Mum was the ­family compass.

“We’re completely devastated, just broken.

“She’s really missed. We’ve got a huge hole where she was. We feel robbed of a mum, grandmother, a wife.

Clare added: “She told Ellis ‘I’ll stay for another five minutes’ and the next thing she’s hit by a ball and falls to the ground.

An inquest was opened this week.
