Man dies after being hit by unmarked police car in Cheshire

A MAN has died after being hit by an unmarked police car in Cheshire last night.

Emergency services raced to the collision in Penketh, but the man later pronounced dead at the scene.

The pedestrian, who has not been named, was knocked down on Warrington Road by a large, dark unmarked Cheshire Police BMW shortly before 7.30pm.

Images from the scene show the front windscreen of the vehicle shattered.

Multiple police vehicles were at the scene before the road reopened his morning.

Forensic investigators worked overnight within the cordoned off area near a pub and Co-op shop.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as their enquiries continue.

A spokesman for Cheshire police said the force has voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A police spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing at this time.

"In line with normal procedure the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
