Police force wants someone to run eBay account for £20k-a-year to flog seized goods — almost as much as new cops earn
A POLICE force wants someone to run its eBay account for £20,000 a year — almost as much as new cops earn.
Sussex Police uses the online auction to flog old uniforms and seized goods.
Items previously sold include a Cartier Santos watch for £4,750 and a Panasonic camera for £972.
But the force now needs an administrator to list property and arrange postage and packaging.
The salary ranges from £19,359 to £20,619 — just shy of the £22,380 starting constables are paid.
Community support officers earn £21,507.
The employee must “describe items honestly, to maintain the integrity of Sussex Police”.
The 37-hour-a-week job is described as an “exciting opportunity” and is a fixed-term contract running until December.
Last year Sussex Police said it had completed more than 29,000 transactions through the site.
Matt Webb, chairman of the Sussex branch of the Police Federation, said: “The issue for me is that the money is what we pay cops when they start, and the two roles are incomparable.
“Police officers’ starting pay has been reduced by politicians and kept artificially low by the chiefs not pushing for a better pay deal.”
Harry Fone, grassroots campaign manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, branded the position a pencil-pushing job.
