A TODDLER has been left with permanent brain damage after she was hit in the head by a foul ball at a Chicago Cubs game last year, according to her family's lawyer.
The two-year-old girl suffered a fractured skull when she was struck in the head by a line drive at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Attorney Richard Mithoff told the on Tuesday: “She (the child) has an injury to a part of the brain, and it is permanent.
“She remains subject to seizures and is on medication and will be, perhaps, for the rest of her life. That may or may not be resolved.”
Mithoff said doctors described the injury to the girl's central nervous system as being comparable to a stroke.
He said the areas of the brain affected include those in which injuries can result from loss of sensation, loss of spatial awareness, and seizures.
It is unknown if the injury caused the girl to have cognitive deficits, he said.
The child was - after Chicago Cubs star Albert Almora Jr. hit a line drive into the crowd.
Mithoff added: “She is able to continue with much of her routine as a girl her age would do, but her parents have to be particularly vigilant, as they are."
“She has wonderful parents and is receiving wonderful care. They obviously are concerned, but she is blessed with a family that is doing relatively well, considering everything.”
In June, the attorney said the toddler had suffered "a skull fracture in the back of her head, subdural bleeding, brain contusions and brain edema which is swelling".
Almora, a dad of two, was overwhelmed with guilt in the aftermath of the incident.
With a trembling voice, Almora told reporters: "As soon as I hit it the first person I locked eyes on was her.
"God willing I'll be able to have a relationship with this little girl for the rest of my life, but just prayers right now.
"I'm speechless and lost for words.
"Being a father with two boys, I want to put a net around the whole stadium, but I'm so sorry.
"I was upset and it just put things in perspective."
There has been no lawsuit filed against the Houston Astros.
In December, Major League Baseball announced that all 30 teams will have extended netting in 2020.
