A Wedding In December author Sarah Morgan talks no daytime TV rule & using Christmas family drama as source material
RUNAWAY bestseller A Wedding In December proves Sarah Morgan has the write formula — no daytime TV.
Londoner Sarah has sold 18million books and currently writes two a year — one in the summer, the other in winter.
She says: “I’m very disciplined — no daytime TV — and I write most days, so two books a year is manageable for me.
“I’m at my desk early and try and write undisturbed for a block of time, and then I’ll break to check emails and engage with readers on social media.
“Having a social media presence does allow readers to chat with you about books and your work.”
Her fans are certainly enjoying her latest title with sales topping 75,000.
The tale about the White family who gather together in snowy Colorado to celebrate the whirlwind wedding of youngest daughter Rosie is a fun, family drama with plenty of twists and turns.
Sarah says: “Some weddings run smoothly, but this isn’t one of them.
“The bride’s parents are in the process of divorcing but haven’t yet found the right time to tell their daughters.
“Eldest daughter Katy is sure Rosie is making a mistake and is determined to stop the wedding, and the bride herself is having second thoughts.”
Sarah doesn’t like to be stuck at her desk all day. She says: “Being a writer involves too much sitting around, so I’ll try and get outdoors and walk or ride my bike.
SO MUCH JUICY MATERIAL
“There is plenty of non-writing work too. I might be in discussion with my publisher about covers or titles, promoting a book deal to readers, or working with the publicity team on promotion.
“The book I’m promoting isn’t usually the one I’m writing, so I have to be careful to talk about the right book.”
Before she wrote her first novel in 2001, Sarah was a nurse but knew she wanted to be a writer when she was just eight years old.
She adds: “I loved being a nurse, but I was desperate to do something creative and I’ve found a way to do that.”
Christmas frequently features in Sarah’s novels — mainly because it offers so much juicy material.

She says: “Christmas is often a source of family drama, the one time of year people who wouldn’t normally spend too much time together are often gathered together in the same space — sometimes trapped there by winter weather. Plenty of material for a writer.
“Christmas for me is all about spending time with family, that’s the most important thing for me.
“I love big, noisy gatherings — and hopefully there won’t be any of the disasters I write about.”
