‘Patronising’ Steve Coogan sparks fury after Alan Partridge actor brands Tory voters ‘ignorant’

ALAN Partridge actor Steve Coogan sparked fury by calling Conservative voters “ignorant” in a bizarre rant.

The luvvie suggested that schools were intentionally underfunded to help win votes and called Brexit backers “ill-informed”.

Coogan appeared on Channel 4 News, where he made the comments about schools and voters.

He said: “The reason the Tories don’t invest in education is they depend on the ignorance that will lead to their support.”

And when asked how the character who made him famous, Alan Partridge, would vote, he replied: “Alan Partridge is ill-informed and ignorant and therefore he’s a Conservative and Brexiteer.”

He is backing the Lib Dems and Labour in a bid to overturn the referendum result.

James Johnson, a former special advisor to Theresa May who was also on the panel, responded: "I don't want to cause a fight with Steve Coogan, but this is exactly the attitude that means that these long term Labour voters who are good people are leaving the Labour party and going to the Conservatives.

"People like Steve and those in the London bubble are telling them their stupid."

In response Coogan was asked by host Cathy Newman whether he was being patronising.

The comedian's comments immediately triggered an outraged response online.

John Roberts wrote: "I was going to vote Conservative but now that Coogan has told me what he thinks I've changed my mind.

"If only more leftie luvvies got involved to impart their wisdom to us lesser mortals the world would be a better place."

Ross Cameron added: "Let's face it, not many are as ignorant and talentless [as] Steve Coogan, teacherous git that he is."

And Steven Harvey dismissed his comments with: "Another champagne socialist trying to get people to vote for the Marxist Jeremy Corbyn."

Coogan, 54, also slipped up on Sky News while trying to slate the Tories, by saying people don’t like the “smell” of Labour.

He said: “It goes beyond Brexit for me, it’s about how we treat our fellow human beings.

“I think there’s a kind of a consensus, a cross-party consensus of politicians and voters who don’t like the smell of this Labour Government.

“It’s the nasty party, it’s encouraging prejudice, it exploits people’s ignorance, people’s fears and insecurities in the worst possible way.”
