Ancient shipwreck from the time of Jesus discovered in the Med with ‘exciting’ cargo on board
A ROMAN shipwreck from the time of Jesus Christ has been discovered with "exciting" cargo on board.
The boat was found off the coast of Greece with preserved jugs used to preserve wine and food.
The containers - known as amphorae - were also thought to be carrying olive oil and grains.
Experts reckon the merchant ship measures 34m in length and 13m in width.
Archaeologist Dr George Ferentinos said: "Its half-buried in the sediment, so we have high expectations that if we go to an excavation in the future we will find part or the whole wooden hull."
He hopes the wreck can be raised in full from the bottom of the Mediterranean.

But a final decision on salvaging it has not been made.
The ship is believed to have been in operation between the first century BC and the first century AD.
The jars have been analysed by experts who determined they were used by the Greeks and Romans.
