Ms Swinson headed into the election insisting she could be PM.

But her party has plummeted in the polls and her personal ratings have taken a massive battering.

Asked directly on Sophy Ridge on Sunday on Sky if she will quit if she loses MPs, Ms Swinson said: “No.”

She added: “I was elected as leader of the Liberal Democrats four months ago and that’s a big job to be done and four months in I have already secured more MPs because of course we had 12 MPs at the last general election and when I became leader of the party.”

She added: “I am absolutely going to stay and I am excited about the future.”

Under Ms Swinson’s leadership the Lib Dems saw their ranks swell to 21 MPs after a string of high profile Labour and Tory defections.

But the party’s popularity has taken a battering during the election campaign, sinking from around 20 points in the polls to hovering just over 10 points.

The Lib Dem boss also hinted that she could do a deal to hand the keys to No10 to Labour if there is a hung Parliament – but only if Jeremy Corbyn quits as leader.

But leaving the door open to a deal, she added: “There are clearly people within the Labour Party that I do work well with and have worked well with.

“In the last two and half, three and a half years we have been working on a cross-party basis to try to secure a People’s Vote and that kind of cooperation will absolutely continue, of course.”
