A TINDER date who met Grace Millane's killer while her body lay in his apartment says the murderer spoke of a "sex game gone wrong" during their meet-up.
Unknown to her, the British backpacker, 22, was lying dead on the floor of the 27-year-old man's apartment in New Zealand, and he had spent the morning before their date looking for a suitcase to store her body in.
Grace's killer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of murdering the 22-year-old British backpacker before burying her body in a suitcase.
The powerfully-built man was first seen wheeling the trolley into the lift at the hotel where he lived full time.
Shortly afterwards, he returned with it laden with two suitcases, one of which he has since admitted contained university graduate Grace’s naked body folded into a fetal position.
KILLER'S CONFESSION
The woman, whose name is suppressed, who unknowingly went on a date with the killer has written about the chilling encounter for the first time.
She recalled the encounter in a piece published to local site , where she wrote how they met in a bar in central Auckland.
She said the man quickly turned the conversation to a "sex-game-gone wrong" story.
The killer told his date he had heard the man had been put away for manslaughter but that it had been tough for him to see the woman he loved dying.
She was disturbed by the story and believed at that point he had begun to notice her discomfort, writing: "In hindsight, it was as if he was using this date to process what he’d done in a rather roundabout way - his brain needed to get it out but his mouth held him back. Was he testing theories on me to see which version seemed most believable?"
The murderer also claimed to have police officer friends who told them they were having problems with bodies being buried 4ft-deep in the Waitakere Ranges.
This was the same spot where Grace's dead body was later found.
He’d been shopping for a suitcase with wheels or a bag with wheels. He was frustrated that he couldn’t find one big enough to fit all his sports equipment. It makes me quite sick now to think of what that suitcase was actually used for
Killer's Tinder date
As the date continued, the woman - a former journalist - wrote that she told the man she enjoyed watching crime shows.
However the conversation took a turn for the worse, as topics became darker, leaving her feeling uncomfortable.
She was then forced to lie to get away from him after cutting their date short.
Writing about the now-terrifying encounter, the woman described how the man seemed "aloof" and had a large, athletic build.
She said he drank his beer quickly, and became "intense" as he steered the conversation to bizarre topics, from poisonous snakes to sex-games gone wrong.
She wrote: "The conversation started like all average Tinder dates - the activities of that previous morning. He’d been shopping for a suitcase with wheels or a bag with wheels. He was frustrated that he couldn’t find one big enough to fit all his sports equipment. Fair enough.
"He looked like a solid guy who played sport well. It makes me quite sick now to think of what that suitcase was actually used for."
DOUBLE LIFE
She wrote of always trying to give dates an hour to avoid being rude, and did the same for this date - only for the conversation to become even stranger.
She then said that he went on to tell her that he had prosecutor friends, and sensing an opportunity to lead the conversation away from his increasingly bizarre chatter, she mentioned her court reporting past.
The woman says she told him how she had reported on a previous unrelated murder trial.
She told him seeing the reactions of the defendant's and victim's families was something she would never forget.
She wrote: "When he heard this he said, 'it’s funny how guys can make one wrong move and go to jail for the rest of their lives'."
The conversation began to darken, as he then told her a story about a guy he claimed to have heard about, whose partner had asked for rough sex involving suffocation.
