Hugh Grant heckled over anti-Semitism after supporting Labour candidate

HUGH Grant was taken to task by Jewish voters last night as he hit the campaign trail with the Labour candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green in North London.

The Love Actually star, who has been out on the campaign trail with MPs from Labour and the Liberal Democrats, drew a huge crowd of people as he took to the streets with Labour candidate Faiza Shaheen, but not all of them were happy to see the actor dipping his toe into politics.

"What about the Jews of this community? Are you advocating for the Jews to vote Labour with 15,000 cases of alleged anti-Semitism reported to the EHRC?" one voter demanded of Mr Grant.

Mr Grant seemed exasperated by the question, sighing, and saying he had already given an answer to the question of campaigning for Labour in spite of its record on anti-Semitism.

Lucky for the Remainer celeb, Ms Shaheen, who is trying to unseat former Tory party leader Iain Duncan Smith, swooped into the rescue and answered the question for him.

"I'm very sorry and the party is very sorry and more is being done to address (anti-Semitisim)," Ms Shaheen said, before pivoting to her own battle with Islamophobia.

Another jumped on the celebrity as he got into the car: "Why are you canvassing for an institutionally racist party Hugh Grant? 87 per cent of British Jews believe there's a problem with anti-semitism in your party. You refuse to answer my question."

The Labour party has been dogged by accusations of anti-Semitism, with Jeremy Corbyn being forced apologise earlier this week for the party's failure to deal with it.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis made an unprecedented intervention in the election, over the anti-semitism row, saying the election was a fight for the "very soul of the nation".

The concerned voters, who came with a van labelled "Labour is institutionally antis-Semitic", tried to continue to voice their concerns as Ms Shaheen continued to talk.

Ms Berger, who is Jewish, quit the Labour party earlier this year over its record on anti-Semitism. She helped form Change UK, before shifting her loyalties again to the Lib Dems and campaigning to revoke Article 50.

Mr Grant is focusing his efforts on campaigning for Remain MPs and does not seem to be swayed by party loyalty, instead focusing his efforts on stopping Brexit.

Earlier this year he signed a petition to revoke Article 50, and he has been using his Twitter account to voice his vendetta against the Tories.

"Unseat a Tory. Don't wast a vote. Vote. UK Emergency," Mr Grant wrote this morning.

Replying to another person's tweet, Mr Grant said his message was to not vote for the Conservatives and vote for whichever party would boot them out of Parliament.
