Horrible Histories author Terry Deary backs our Books For Schools campaign
HORRIBLE Histories author Terry Deary believes the future is bright for children’s literature. He says books aimed at kids have never been better.
Backing our brilliant Books For Schools campaign, Terry said: “If authors are to compete with electronics, we need to up our game and give children the sort of books they love to read.
“If we do that, they will continue to thrive. Books have become more child-friendly over the years. I grew up in the Fifties when paper was scarce. Books for children were at the back of the queue."
“We didn’t have any books at home. Kids now are so lucky and they don’t appreciate it because they don’t realise what it used to be like. The story books when I was growing up were full of posh kids who went on holidays every year and had adventures."
“I couldn’t relate to them. Modern books have moved on and feature characters children can identify with.”
We have partnered with HarperCollins to offer primary schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland the chance to claim a fantastic box of Collins Big Cat books, worth £600, FREE.
One in four eligible schools have registered to collect tokens, one of which is printed here today. Schools that collect a total of 3,500 tokens get a free box including titles by David Walliams, Julia Donaldson, and Michael Morpurgo.
Terry, a grandad of three, said: “Schools are under a lot of pressure so I’m sure they’re grabbing the opportunity of new books through The Sun’s campaign."
“It was at the school library I picked up the reading habit. The first book that really drew my attention was old and ragged. It was The Ladybird Book Of British Birds. I loved it.”
Terry, 73, who lives in County Durham, has penned an astonishing 315 books.

His Horrible Histories series, including Rotten Romans, is hugely popular and has sold 30million copies.
Terry said: “Boys are more interested in non-fiction. Not all children want stories. Reading with a child makes them realise it is enjoyable. A lot of parents worry about reading aloud but they don’t need to be an actor. It’s about personal contact. We’re all stretched for time but put it in your diary and create a culture of reading. Your child will thank you.”
Fire Flight, the follow-up to Wiggott’s Wonderful Waxworld, by Terry Deary, is out now from Scholastic.
