House where Adolf Hitler was born to be turned into a police station after becoming shrine for Nazis

ADOLF Hitler’s childhood home is set to be turned into a police station after becoming a shrine for neo-Nazis.

The Braunau am Inn building – where the fascist dictator spent the first weeks of his life – will be converted for local cops after a plan to make it a refugee centre fell through.

The government bought it outright in 2014 for £694,000 in a bid to stop it becoming a far-right shrine.

It had previously been a day-care centre for disabled people – but was mothballed after owner Gerlinde Pommer refused to make it more wheelchair-friendly.

Austrian interior minister Wolfgang Peschorn said the plans would be an “unmistakable signal” that the property would not commemorate Nazism.

He said: “Future use by the police should send an unmistakable signal that this building will never again evoke the memory of National Socialism.”

Hitler was born at a flat in the building on 20 April 1889 after his father was posted to the town for work.

The family moved to another address shortly after his birth.

They left the town for good when he was three years old.
