The same Airbus A320 was hit with a similar scare on the outbound service hours earlier. The jet has been pulled from the fleet pending a probe.

In all there have been 291 “fume events” on BA jets this year. The term covers various scenarios including odd smells.

A film to be aired next year recalls a 2016 Airbus A380 San Francisco to Heathrow flight on which passengers’ eyes “turned bright red” and crew felt “spaced out”.

Stale food was blamed. An investigation found no evidence of toxic fumes. But the incident prompted staff to swab-test some BA Airbus A380s.

The film says that confirmed the presence of hydraulic fluids and engine oils inside. There is no suggestion of any cover-up by BA.

It has tested air filter devices and said it would never operate an aircraft that posed a risk to customers or crew.
