The survey of more than 1,000 children at secondary school revealed that 35 per cent — more than one in three — have suffered bullying.

Eleven per cent said they had missed school because of it and around 14 per cent admitted switching their journey to and from home.

Just under one in five (19 per cent) avoided their friends and the same amount have stayed off social media and gaming platforms.

Asked who could help reduce bullying, most said schools (74 per cent), then parents (64 per cent) and kids (56 per cent).

The Anti- Bullying Alliance, which commissioned the poll, set out pupils’ recommendations to address the issue.

They include schools recording how much bullying is taking place, and “hotspots” where it happens.

Parents should also try to understand kids’ tech.

Anti-Bullying Alliance director Martha Evans said the figures show “we clearly have a problem”.

She added: “Everyone has a part to play in reducing and stemming the impact of bullying.”
