The pair’s solo talks for two hours without any aides during an emergency summit in a Wirral hotel three two weeks ago laid the template for the new EU agreement.

Mr Varadkar described Boris as “personable, intelligent, and witty”, adding: “He is very normal”.

In a hint that he struggled with the PM’s predecessor Mrs May, the Dublin boss also said about Boris: “You can talk to him about stuff, you know. Some politicians are really hard to talk to.

“He’s a little bit eccentric, a little bit alternative.”

When Mrs May was in No10, some EU leaders complained that they often didn’t know what she really wanted or thought.

Mr Varadkar also said yesterday he would like to see a united Ireland in his lifetime, but only with the consent of the people in Northern Ireland.

Asked if he wants unification, the leader said: “I would, but only in accordance with the Good Friday Agreement so that’s only with the consent of the majority of people in Northern Ireland.

“That’s really important stuff and nobody should be forced into anything they don’t want.”
