Donald Trump takes credit for the Syrian ceasefire and claims the US saved thousands of lives

DONALD Trump claimed the US had saved the lives of “thousands” of people in Syria in a rousing speech to his supporters last night.

The President declared the US was no longer fighting other peoples' wars and took credit for the ceasefire brokered between Russia and Turkey earlier this week.

He claimed his actions had “avoided another costly military intervention” in which “many thousands of people could have been killed”.

Mr Trump sparked a Turkish-led offensive along the Syrian border two weeks ago and effectively abandoned Kurdish partners who helped defeat Islamic State.

But earlier this week Turkey and Russia agreed a deal for the Kurdish-held north-east Syria.

The US had imposed sanctions on Ankara in response to the offensive, but said yesterday they would be lifted if the ceasefire held.

Flanked by Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Mr Trump said: “We’ve avoided another costly military intervention, many thousands of people could have been killed.

“Turkey, Syria and all forms of the Kurds have been fighting for centuries.

“We have done them a great service, a great job for all of them.

Declaring the US was done fighting others’ wars, he said: “We’re getting out. Let someone else fight over this long bloodstained sand.”
