Girlfriend, 20, died in 80mph crash after boyfriend staged road race then smashed into lampost
A YOUNG woman was killed when her boyfriend ploughed into a lampost during an 80mph road race, a court heard.
Tragic Sophie Brimble, 20, was a front-seat passenger when Jay Bayliss skidded out of control in Brynmawr, Wales.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how Bayliss, 25, was racing with friend Neil Brooks, 49, through 30mph residential streets in July 2017.
The pair were driving at more than double the speed limit in the moments before the crash.
Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe said: "It was one driver egging the other on. It was this race that led to the collision which led to the death of Miss Brimble.
"Mr Bayliss was travelling way above the speed limit in the lead up to the collision.
RACERS 'WERE DOUBLE SPEED LIMIT'
"He had been driving at excessive speed through a residential area in excess of 80mph.
"Mr Bayliss lost control, his car began to rotate and it slid towards a metal lamppost.
"The result was a catastrophe."
"They both then drove at high speed along that road, having little or no regard to their excessive speed of the fact that it was through a residential area.

"They pushed their vehicles hard through this residential area, both of them reaching speeds in excess of 80mph, their focus now on their race.”
Brooks, of Ebbw Vale, Glamorgan, denies causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving.
The trial continues.
