But taunted by his Tory foes about when he will stop running scared of triggering a snap election, Mr Corbyn said it could be “within weeks”.

He told the Commons: “I said to the PM last month, get the (Brexit) extension, take us away from the dangers of No Deal and then we are in a position to do that.

“We may be just weeks away from the first Queen’s Speech of a Labour government.”

Seething Labour backbenchers last night warned the leadership they are not ready for an election at their weekly parliamentary meeting.

Labour MP and rebel alliance ringleader Hilary Benn urged Mr Corbyn to back a Boris Johnson Brexit if it was subject to another referendum.

He sold Sky News: “My view is if there is an agreement we are happy in the interests of compromise to support it as long as it goes to a confirmatory referendum.

“That is my view – it’s for the Labour frontbench to decide.”

Labour backbenchers are plotting to pass a new law on ‘super Saturday’ to force Britain to have another Brexit vote.

At the rare weekend parliamentary sitting this Saturday, they will table an amendment to force Boris’ deal to go to a public vote.

And if no agreement is thrashed out in time, they are threatening to bring back Theresa May’s deal so they can attach a referendum to that.
