Who is Anne Sacoolas’ husband Jonathan and is the US diplomat a spy?
JONATHAN Sacoolas is an alleged American spy whose wife Anne is embroiled in a diplomatic immunity storm following a hit-and-run that killed a teenage boy.
Here's all the details on where he's from, why he has diplomatic immunity and when he married Anne Sacoolas.
Who is Anne Sacoolas' husband Jonathan?
Jonathan Saccolas is a US diplomat and alleged NSA spy based in Northampton.
He was born in Oregon, and attended South Salem High School before studying electrical engineering at the University of Southern California.
The diplomat was employed by the Defence Department when he married in 2003.
Jonathan is married to Anne Sacoolas, who fled Britain after Harry Dunn, 19, died in a fatal hit-and-run.
The teen died after his motorbike collided with a car close to RAF Croughton with the US embassy confirming that Anne was behind the wheel of the car.
It was later reported that Anne was driving on the wrong side of the road when she crashed head on into Harry.
Northamptonshire Police confirmed Anne fled Britain claiming diplomatic immunity.
Is Jonathan Sacoolas a US spy?
A lawyer acting as a spokesperson for the family of Harry Dunn told the that Jonathan - who was already reported to be a diplomat - was a senior spy based in the UK.
He said: "He was working at Croughton, which is a communications base, so he was working with intelligence which is, I guess, why it has been handled in the way that it has."
Jonathan was based at RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire.
Do the couple have diplomatic immunity?
Anne claimed diplomatic immunity after a special deal was put in place between the UK and the US which gives staff and their families based at RAF Croughton diplomatic immunity.
Usually, diplomatic immunity only covers those diplomats and their dependants based in London.
The special arrangement has been in place as early as 1994 for this particular base.
on October 13, Harry Dunn's family said the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has written to them to say a US suspect in the case does not have diplomatic immunity.
The family's spokesman Radd Seiger said the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has written to Mr Dunn's family about Mrs Sacoolas, saying: "The US have now informed us that they too consider that immunity is no longer pertinent."
The letter, sent by Dominic Raab to the family, said: "We have pressed strongly for a waiver of immunity, so that justice can be done.
"Whilst the US government has steadfastly declined to give that waiver, that is not the end of the matter.
"We have looked at this very carefully... the UK Government's position is that immunity, and therefore any question of waiver, is no longer relevant in Mrs Sacoolas' case, because she has returned home."
