Metropolitan Police face probe over disastrous VIP paedophile investigation after Carl Beech allegations
POLICE watchdogs are to investigate London's Met over its disastrous VIP paedophile ring probe.
Home Secretary Priti Patel is to tell Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary to review the force and its response to the affair.
She will on Friday ask it to look at Scotland Yard’s response to a damning report on the scandal by former High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques.
The move will increase pressure on Met Commissioner Cressida Dick - who oversaw Operation Midland in its early stages.
The police chief has rejected demands for a fresh probe into the officers involved.
The force spent £2.5million probing allegations made by fantasist Carl Beech who was jailed in July for 18 years for making false claims about a series of establishment figures.
POLICE BLUNDERS
Sir Richard wrote a damning report for the force about the case which highlighted 43 blunders.
So far only a limited summary of the judge’s findings have been released but it will release a fuller version on Friday.
On the same day Miss Patel will write to Tom Winsor, who is the HM Inspector of Constabulary, asking him to conduct an inspection of Scotland Yard.
Miss Patel is understood to be frustrated at the Met’s handling of the case.
A source told the Daily Mail: “No one can question the Home Secretary’s commitment to backing up the police. But we must always maintain public confidence in all our institutions and ensure they are held to account.”
Beech was convicted of making false allegations of murder and child sex abuse.
He had accused senior politicians and army and security chiefs of sadistic sexual abuse and said he witnessed boys being murdered in the 1970s and 1980s.
