Who is the Donald Trump whistleblower? What we know so far
THE Whitehouse is rocked by further allegations as a whistle-blower claims Donald Trump sought help from the Ukrainian president to win the 2020 US election.
It is alleged Trump attempt to press Volodymyr Zelensky, into investigating the son of his 2020 rival Joe Biden.
It is unclear what allegations may have been levelled against 49-year-old Hunter Biden - who had worked for a Ukrainian gas company.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi launched a formal impeachment inquiry and Trump was later impeached.
Here’s what we know about the whistleblower and what’s been alleged:
- The whistleblower wrote a seven page letter to the House intelligence committee in August and the committee has now made that public.
- Few details are known about the whistleblower, who has not been identified by name, gender or job title but it has been reported that they are a CIA officer. A lawyer for the whistleblower warned that trying to identify the person could place them "in harm's way".
- The officer worked at the White House and claims senior White House officials tried to "lock down" all details of a phone call between Mr Trump and the Ukrainian president.
- The CIA officer didn’t personally listen to the July phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25.
- But in the complaint the whistleblower said that more than half a dozen US officials told him about the details of that phone call “in the course of my official duties.”
- According to the whistleblower, the call transcript was not stored in the usual computer system but in a "stand-alone computer system reserved for codeword-level intelligence information, such as covert action".
- The whistleblower accused Trump “using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 US election”. These efforts “pose risks to US national security” and represent a serious abuse of power.
- The President demanded to know who gave information to the whistleblower, saying the source was "close to a spy".
