Volkswagen speeds ahead of Toyota to become the world’s bestselling car manufacturer
The German car maker revealed it had shifted over 10million vehicles in 2016 in face of emissions' scandal

VOLKSWAGEN has become the world’s best-selling car maker, despite the bad smell from its emissions scandal.
The German firm has overtaken TOYOTA, which had topped the global sales charts for four years until 2015.
Toyota revealed it shifted 10.175million vehicles in 2016.
VW said earlier this month it sold 10.31million last year.
VW admitted in September 2015 it had fitted 11million cars, including 1.2million in the UK, with software which could cheat emissions tests.
It led to worldwide criticism and calls for compensation.
Nearly a fifth of cars and vans registered in the UK last year were made by the VW group, which includes Skoda, Audi and Seat, the SOCIETY OF MOTOR MANUFACTURERS & TRADERS said.
VW was boosted by a rise in sales in China, although it is still suffering in the US where its emissions scandal first emerged.
Seiji Sugiura, an analyst at the Tokai Tokyo Research Institute, said VW “could stay at the top for the next few years”.
US firm GENERAL MOTORS will report its 2016 figures next week.
It has already suggested it will not top VW’s figure.
