WHEELY ODD

Baffled police pull over ‘strangest vehicle’ they’ve seen in 26 years on the M25 — but it’s perfectly legal

THIS electric motorbike, with a body of balsa wood and duct tape, was pulled over — and found to be legal.

Police stopped the vehicle, which looks like a small boat or a plane cockpit, in Bedfordshire.

A traffic cop tweeted: “The most unusual vehicle I’ve stopped on a motorway in 26 years. All checked and in order.” The fact it is legal suggests it had a number plate, insurance and MOT.

The strange automobile appeared to be a three wheeler and the officers who checked it admitted they were still not really sure what it was.

Useful followers on Twitter offered fascinating explanations, many around German-made vehicles and aircraft.

Someone recognised the contraption as an 'old Messersmidt' while another said it was a Dingensbummens or 'thingy' in German.

A visitor to the German capital said: When we were in Berlin we came across this...it’s a cycle powered vehicle with electrics!

Another wrote: it looks like a homemade version of a Quasar motorcycle from the 1980's ??

Bedfordshire Police said the oddball was in fact a motorbike with a shell made mostly of fibreglass and plastic around it.

The motorcyclist appeared to have used the 'home made' vehicle to pop to the shops. Bags of sliced bread were visible behind the fibreglass as well as what looked like a box of cereal.

The crafty rider got props from fellow motorway users who commented on the road cop's tweet.

A Twitter user wrote: "This was on a M O T O R W A Y...??? I don't know whether to be appalled or impressed by the bravery of the driver."

Someone else said: "Now that really is breaking away from any convention! I like it."

And a wary user wrote: "I wouldn't be driving that thing on a motorway. Looks like a deathtrap!"
