Don’t be a messy motorist like Boris Johnson — use these car-cleaning hacks to spruce up your banger

CLEANING up at the polls may look easy for Boris Johnson – but it’s a different story when it comes to his car, as we revealed yesterday.

So we’ve put together some hacks to help the wannabe Prime Minister spruce up his topsy-turvy Toyota.

There’s no need to fork out a fortune – just by using common kitchen and bathroom products your banger will no longer be trash.

Here are Grant Rollings’ tips so your vehicle isn’t a, er, tip.

  1. Keeping cupholders clear of dust, sticky juice and crumbs is a piece of cake with cupcake liners. They fit perfectly and are simple to lift out and replace when they get mucky.

2. Recycle plastic containers by using them as a temporary bin so your motor doesn’t get messy in the first place.

3. Dogged by pet hair? Removing it can be trickier than ousting a prime minister, but a neat hack is to use a spray bottle containing water. Mist the seat — don’t soak it — then run a squeegee over it

4. Cleaning your car’s crevices can be infuriating. So wrap a cloth around a small screwdriver and use this to poke the dirt out of those fiddly nooks and crannies. A damp toothbrush does the trick too, while old make-up brushes are great for clearing clogged air vents.

5. Panes can be a pain when they’re not pristine so get those car windows sparkling by cleaning with a mixture of vinegar and water, plus a little washing-up liquid if really grubby.

6. And sort those smearing windscreen wipers by cleaning them with surgical spirit. If that doesn’t work, new wipers might be needed.

7. Hair conditioner containing lanolin makes your locks shine — and it can do the same for your motor. After washing your car, just add it to the rinse water then buff.

8. Head for the olive oil to get a dashing dashboard. Rubbing in a small amount helps retain moisture and reduces the risk of cracking.

9. If your children’s crayons have melted on the back seat, put wax paper on the mess then run an iron over it to gradually lift it off.

10. Another way to keep your seats sweet is to mix white vinegar with baking soda into a paste and rub it into your upholstery with an old toothbrush. Once dry, vacuum up any residue.

11. Enjoy the sweet smell of victory in the war against whiffs with a home-made air freshener. Mix baking soda with your favourite essential oils, place in an old jam jar and poke holes in its lid, then pop it in one of your cup holders.

12. Stick it to tatty old bumper stickers with WD-40 lubricating oil. Spray on and let it soak. While it is damp you should be able to rip off the sticker in one go without leaving glue stains behind.
