DRIVERS in London face 20mph speed limits - and fines of £100 for breaking them.

All roads within the congestion zone that are managed by Transport for London would get the lower limit by May next year.

It comes after an “unacceptable” 128 road deaths and 2,256 serious injuries in the last three years across the capital where speed was a “contributory factor”.

It would affect 5.5miles of roads including Millbank, Albert Embankment, and Borough High Street. They would all carry a £100 fine, up from the standard £60, for speeding.

The move is to cut cyclist and pedestrian deaths. A pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling at 30mph is up to five times more likely to die than one hit at 20mph.

A second phase will see speeds cut by 10mph on a further 93 miles of roads outside the congestion zone by 2024.

This would see cuts of 50mph to 40mph, 40mph to 30mph, or 30mph or 20mph where appropriate.

A five week consultation began yesterday (Wed) to allow feedback from drivers.

TfL roads carry about a third of all traffic. The changes would mean that most roads in central London become 20mph.
