A study by revealed Londoners could earn as much as £2,254 a year by renting out their driveways and garages to other motorists.

The capital topped the list of 50 towns leasing out their properties as car parks, likely due to higher living costs.

Brighton was another popular spot for private parking spaces, with owners raking in £1,839 a year.

And home owners in Leeds also received significant earnings from the program, taking home £1,763 annually.

Other preferred locations for available parking included Bristol (£1,647 a year), Oxford (£1,624), Glasgow (£1,536), Liverpool (£1,460) and Reading (£1,458).

Since YourParkingSpace.co.uk launched in 2006, Brits renting out their driveway or garage have earned almost £18million using the program.

Harrison Woods, managing director at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: "Renting out a driveway provides a steady stream of additional income for thousands of households across the UK.

"It’s very encouraging to see that the top earning towns and cities are spread across the country, offering money making opportunities to countless Brits who own a driveway or empty parking space.

"I would encourage homeowners with an empty driveway to register it for renting as soon as possible and see how much money they can make from it.

"Homeowners are making significant sums from a previously overlooked asset right on their doorstep – their driveway. It really is one of the easiest ways to make some extra money."

But other motorists parking in front of your house isn't always a money-earning event.

A bizarre legal loophole means anyone can park on your drive and there isn't much you can do about it.

Once a car moves onto your driveway, it's technically on private property meaning the council and police cannot move it unless it is damaged, uninsured or doesn't have a valid MOT.
