Bizarre 260mph amphibious supercar could let mega-rich owners skip traffic queues and drive to work along the Thames
The Amphi-X has been designed to compete with the best from Bugatti and Lamborghini - and would have blistering top speeds both on land and on the water
A BIZARRE amphibious supercar has been designed that would allow its mega-rich owners to beat the traffic by taking a water route to work instead.
Inspired by the Bugatti Veyron, the futuristic vehicle would allegedly have a land top speed of more than 260mph.
Dubbed the Amphi-X, the electric-powered motor would also be able to hit a top speed of 90mph on water - equivalent to a high-powered speed boat's top speed of 80 knots.
The amphibious supercar is designed so that its wheels retract on entering the water and has a high-powered propulsion system similar to a jet-ski.
But while it may be a solution to the UK's traffic problem for a lucky few, it's predicted to come with a £2.5million price tag.
Being marketed largely towards Dubai's mega-rich motorists, the concept will need significant investment if it's ever going to get off the ground.
The innovative project is the brainchild of Bei Chen Nan, who came up with the plans as part of his final year university project.
Mr Chen Nan, from Melbourne, Australia, said he designed the Amphi-X after reading an article in Top Gear magazine which described the lack of decent amphibious vehicles on the market.
Differing itself from regular amphibious vehicles, the Amphi-X has room for four people and is designed to compete with the world's most expensive supercars.
Built from carbon fibre and aluminium, the designer claims the vehicle would go from 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds.
Powered by a lithium-air battery the canopy of the vehicle would also be made from special solar cell glass, which would charge the battery as it moved.
The vehicle also uses a unique tyre design which means not only is it able to travel over any terrain, but it also offers the driver the ability to manoeuvre the vehicle in any direction - making parking a breeze.
30 year old designer, Bei Chen Nan, said: "The whole project took a year from research, concept developments, clay modelling and prototyping.
"Many major cities have been clogged up with cars, yet nearly every major city in the world has a virtually unused set of arterial waterways running straight through it.

"And instead of being stressfully stacked in traffic, we could use the rivers or waterways to turn every stressful journey into a pleasant cruise along the beach or rivers.
"The vehicle's size and dimensions were inspired by the exotic sports car, the Lamborghini Aventador or Bugatti Veyron, to give it the aesthetics of a supercar.
"The Amphi-X is designed mostly for the wealthy market in Dubai. It would be in the same category as a Ferrari Enzo or limited edition Bugatti Veyron of $3.4 million (£2.6 million).
"It would be a dream to have this design made someday, hopefully, there are some potential investors or a company who would like to make this dream come true."
