DRIVERS on the M1 had to swerve to narrowly miss a car bonnet and dangerous debris flying off a Volkswagen Golf, because the driver failed to close it properly.

The shocking dashcam video shows the VW travelling at 80mph on the motorway's fast lane before the car rips to shreds.

The recording was captured by Paul Troth from Rugby, Warwickshire, while he was driving near Nottingham earlier this year in August.

Meanwhile, the Golf owner immediately brakes and puts on his hazard lights - staying in the right-hand lane.

The bonnet flies behind Troth's car - it is unknown whether it eventually hit or landed near another vehicle.

A hard shoulder is visible for the VW driver to stop in, but he reportedly stopped in the narrow central reservation.

Troth only recently shared the footage on a closed Facebook group, stating that he was driving at around 75mph.

The 48-year-old said: "Driving down the M1 this guy in the VW Golf forgot to close his bonnet.

"[It] could have been a lot worse if there were [sic] more traffic on the road. Luckily he had the awareness to pull [into the] central res."

However, social media commentators criticised the Golf owner's actions, beyond not closing the bonnet properly.

One post said: "That was almost explosive! That bonnet could have killed someone."

While someone else said: “What a p*****k to stop there - he could have easily pulled on to the hard shoulder."

Another suggested: "[The] Golf driver needs to get to Halfords for some bonnet pins."

To which a commentator quipped: "I think he’ll need a new bonnet and windscreen first."
