WhatCar? also handed out gongs for Skoda's Citigo, the Audi A3 Sportback and the Seat Ateca

MERCEDES-BENZ’s E-Class Estate is the best second-hand car you buy today.

It was named as the Used Car of the Year – and the best estate – by consumer advisor WhatCar? for its 2016-onward models.

Other winners from the night included the Skoda Citigo (2013-present), which was given the title of the best second-hand city car.

The model is available for under £6,000, and WhatCar? recommends the 59bhp 1.0-litre petrol option.

The best used family car was listed as the Audi A3 Sportback (2013-present), costing under £17,000.

It’s not the first time the A3 has won the category, and it was even named the Car of the Year in 2013.

Skoda also claimed the small car of the year with its Fabia (2015-present), with compliments going to its turbocharged engines.

The popular small SUV or crossover category was won by the Seat Ateca (2016-present), with its prices having reduced to under £17,000 now that the car has flooded forecourts.

Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-5 (2012-17) won the large SUV award due to its balance of power and fuel efficiency.

Audi’s Q7 (2015-present) was crowned as the best luxury SUV, because it is also one of the most practical cars of its kind – followed by finalists the BMW X5 and the Land Rover Ranger Rover Sport.

Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, said: “When judging the estate category, practicality was foremost in our judges’ minds, but what lent the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate the win was how much more it offers.

“For example, an interior that makes every occupant feel truly special; an equipment list that’s impressive even in entry-level versions; efficient diesel engines; and a comfortable, quiet driving experience that does a fantastic job of isolating you from the road and the world outside.

“No wonder we deemed it worthy not only of our Used Estate Car of the Year award, but also our overall Used Car of the Year trophy.”
