Avon and Somerset is the worst region for speeding

DRIVERS in the Avon and Somerset are the worst for speeding on UK roads, having racked up almost 390,000 offences over the past two years.

Eight out of the 10 most 'active' cameras are also in the region - all placed around the M4, M5 and M32.

New research by also reveals that 135,000 incidents have been recorded on those eight cameras alone between June 2016 and May this year.

The cameras from the Severn Beach rail line overbridge to the end of the M32 (southbound) caught 22,350 offences - the most in the UK.

Two cameras in Bedfordshire make up the top 10 - one on the M1 and the other on the A1081 Airport Way, south-west bound.

Bedfordshire is also the second-worst area for speeding with over 143,000 offences recorded.

West Mercia, South Wales and Cheshire make up the top five list with 390,000 cases between them in the past couple of years.

Meanwhile, Merseyside Police recorded the highest speed limit breaker - with a driver travelling 148mph in a 50mph zone.

Gloucestershire Police also caught the highest speed on UK roads at 167mph on a national speed limit road.

Durham saw the most increase in speeding offences year-on-year, with a whopping 154.3 per cent rise.

To put that into perspective, the second-highest growth was recorded in Kent by only 21.4 per cent.

Unsurprisingly, August was the month of the most speeding offences as drivers feel more daring on the dry roads.

On the flip side, December recorded the least number of cases at around 144,000.
