Women pay close to £100 less for car insurance than men – but there’s a good reason why

Females pay a premium of £701 for their cover, while males pay £793 on average - a price hike likely caused by being four times more likely to commit a motoring offence

DESPITE a fairly even split between the number of male and female drivers on the road, a whopping 79 per cent of all motoring offences are carried out by men.

It's a good reason why the latest Q2 figures from insurance comparison site Confused.com show that women are paying £92 less for car cover than their male counterparts.

The data is based on six million insurance quotes carried out by the firm in the last quarter.

It also found that females have a premium of £701, while men pay £793 on average.

Speeding was found to be the single biggest offence for both genders, however, 23 per cent of males were guilty of the crime compared to just seven per cent of females.

A worrying 18 per cent of men also had no car insurance whatsoever.

Further to being four times more prone to breaking road laws, men also made two thirds of all insurance claims in 2017.

Of the 700,000-plus claims made last year, males contributed to around 470,000 - although only 17 per cent admitted to being at fault.

Pay-outs claimed were slightly higher for men at £3,271 on average, with women's at £3,121.

Confused.com suggests that this is because males drive cars of a higher value at £8,654, which is £1,563 more than females' cars on average.

This alone would increase the cost of car insurance for men.

Amanda Stretton, Confused.com Motoring Editor, said: “As a female racing driver, I know women can hold their own when it comes to driving, and data suggests that they are in fact safer on the roads.

“But regardless of who is paying more, men or women, car insurance is a cost that is unavoidable for all drivers and is one of the many reasons motoring is becoming unaffordable.

"We encourage both male and female drivers to shop around for their car insurance."
