FAMILY TREASURE

Will this be the most expensive car registration plate to ever be sold in the UK at over £500k, having been on an OAP’s ordinary cars for the past 48 years?

The '2 GTO' plate could potentially be put on a Ferrari 250 GTO - the most expensive car sold both at auction and privately

HAVING been licensed to an Austin Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite, the ‘2 GTO’ plate has remained with the same owner since 1970.

Now, it’s been put up for auction with an official estimate of £200,000 to £300,000, however, it’s likely to fetch much more.

The plate belongs to a retiree that wants to remain unnamed, but admits that the rare plate has been used on ordinary cars.

Following the Sprite, the collectable was licensed to a Rover SD1, Peugeot 505, Honda Accord Coupe and, most recently, a Peugeot 407.

Said to have become part of the family on the school and shopping run, the owner never considered selling up until a friend suggested that it may add a bit of money to his pension fund.

Needless to say, he was quite shocked when discovering the plate’s true value.

The most expensive plate ever sold in the UK is the £518,480 ’25 O’, which was registered to a £10million Ferrari 250 GT SWB in 2014.

Currently, the GTO also holds the titles of the most valuable car ever sold at auction and privately.

Last month, a 1963 model changed hands for £52million – making it the world’s most expensive classic car.

At auction, a 1962 GTO sold for more than £29million in 2014, but RM Sotheby’s are also putting another example under the hammer on August 24-25 in California.

This Ferrari is estimated to raise a record-breaking £35million – and could also pair perfectly with the matching licence plate that will be sold in London on September 5 by RM Sotheby’s.

‘F1’ is believed to be the world’s most sought-after registration plate and is currently on sale for £15million.

Its been licensed to a 2013 Bugatti Veyron SuperSport owned by Afzal Kahn, the founder of UK-based car modifier Kahn Design.

Having been purchased for £375,000 from Essex Council in 2008, the 44-year-old reportedly rejected a £6million bid for the plate four years ago.
