REGAL RIDE

A classic Range Rover that used to belong to the Royal Family has sold for over £100,000

More than 1,000 hours of restoration work has been put into this 1975 4x4 at a cost of over £60,000

Described as the finest Range Rover to ever pass through Silverstone Auctions, the Royal Range Rover sold for a grand £101,250.

The final bidding price makes it the most expensive model of its kind seen by the auction house, and the second-highest in the world.

Delivered to the Royal Household on August 13th, 1975, the car is believed to be housed at Windsor Castle.

However, the Suffix D model was found in a state of disrepair at a Worcester farm in 2013.

The former owner “casually mentioned” the car belonged to the Royals when it was being towed away, according to Silverstone Auctions.

Once confirmed by the British Heritage Museum, the auction vendor spent £60,000 – plus VAT – on its restoration.

Specialists carried out more than 1,000 hours – and nearly two years – working on the project.

Following a tour of the Prosecco region in Italy by its new owner, the Range Rover totted up 62,000 miles on the clock.

The restoration was documented from start to finish by Petrolicious.

Finished in its original Lincoln Green colour, the car also comes with a special order full-length folding roof – a favourite of the Royals.

The car was estimated to sell for £70,000 to £80,000 at auction.

It was sold with a Heritage Certificate, a new MoT and the full details of its restoration.

Arwel Richards, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, said: “To get such a superbly restored early Range Rover is rare, but to get one with a verified Royal connection is even rarer.

“The Heritage Certificate states delivery to the Royal Household, we believe to Windsor Castle.

“Twenty-Ten Engineering are the industry leaders when it comes to Range Rover restoration and the car is a true survivor, having been found in a barn on a farm.”
