One born every nine minutes – record year for electric car ownership on the horizon
More than 28,000 pure electric and hybrid cars have been registered to Brits so far this year
LATEST figures suggest that more people than ever are buying plug-in cars, with UK registrations growing by 25 per so far this year compared to 2017.
The total number of both pure electric and hybrid motors on British roads is now over 161,000.
Go Ultra Low, a collaborative campaign between the car industry and the government, reveals 28,054 green cars have been registered in 2018.
Almost 22,000 of those are made up by hybrids, which is a 40-per-cent increase on last year's registrations.
Bolstered by its latest model released in April, the Nissan Leaf continues to be the most popular pure electric car.
With 1,501 sales in Q2 alone, the total number of Leaf registrations now stand at 3,511 this year.
The south east of the country has been the destination of most deliveries, with nearly 10,000 plug-ins registered in the region since January 1.
Unsurprisingly, Londoners have been going green following T-Charge daily fees to drive in the city with polluting vehicles.
In addition to the ban of petrol and diesel cars from 2040, the government also recently introduced the new Road to Zero Strategy to encourage plug-in purchases.
However, Britain has a long way to go yet, with almost half of the public wrongly believing electric cars cannot be put through a car wash.
MORE ON ELECTRIC CARS
Jesse Norman, Electric Vehicles Minister, said: "There has never been a better time to own an electric vehicle and these latest figures show growing numbers of people are making the switch.
"Our mission is for all new cars and vans to be effectively zero emission by 2040. That is why we are ensuring that the UK is the best place in the world to build and own an electric vehicle.
"The recently launched Road to Zero strategy sets out one of the most comprehensive support packages in the world for the transition to zero emission vehicles, including measures which will help enable hundreds of thousands of new charge points across the UK."
