YOUNG AND RECKLESS

Do you understand your motor insurance policy? Youngsters prove to be clueless on car cover

YOUNG drivers seem to be seriously ill-informed about car insurance, with a quarter of 18 to 24 year olds admitting to not knowing what a no claims bonus is.

Almost a half of those surveyed by YouGov - on behalf of insurance broker Swinton Group - are not sure what they'd need to do if they were hit by an uninsured driver.

Worrying, 17 per cent of young people incorrectly believe that those learning how to drive do not need insurance at all.

While a third are unsure about what their policy covers, a quarter of the correspondents said they would not take out car insurance if it was legal to do so.

One in five young drivers also think they automatically have fully-comprehensive cover when they're driving other people's cars.

Over 40 per cent wrongly assume they do not need to inform their insurance provider if they paid for any damage to their cars themselves.

But young drivers are not the only ones that need to brush up their motor insurance knowledge.

Twelve per cent of older drivers are not confident about what their policy entitles.

A quarter also believe they do not need to tell their insurer if they've arrange to pay for car damage.

Meanwhile, a fifth of those aged over 55 consider travel insurance more important, with one in 10 believing pet insurance takes priority.

Mike McGrail, Senior Product Manager at Swinton Group, said: "Our research has uncovered a worrying lack of confidence in car insurance cover, especially amongst younger drivers.

"Although many may think this is a less important element of car ownership, the simplest misunderstanding can leave drivers at risk should they need to make a claim.

"We know there's a long road ahead of us to get drivers to feel confident they understand the ins and outs of their car insurance policy. As an industry we need to do more."
