Is this Britain’s worst pothole? Motorists find KNEE DEEP pit in the middle of the road

A PAIR of motorists may have uncovered Britain's worst pothole.

The two engineers stumbled across a pit almost two feet deep on an East Yorkshire single carriageway.

Matthew Pannhausen was on his way to work with colleague, Dean Dunhill, when they were told about the shockingly deep pothole by a friend.

Deciding to check out the crater for themselves, the duo took an alternate route and found the enormous hollow on Seaton Road, East Riding.

When Dean went to test out the depth of the pothole, the pair were shocked to find it went all the way up to his knee.

Both are road engineers, meaning they fix potholes for a living, and said the giant dent could cause a fatal accident.

Matthew, from North Frodingham, Yorkshire, said: “I’d seen the pothole on my friend’s Snapchat, and knew we had to check it out.

“It seemed to have got worse by the time we got there and when Dean had a look, he decided to see how deep it was with his leg.

“We were shocked when he got in and the hole was knee-high, it was crazy how deep a pothole could get.

“It’s worrying as the pothole definitely could’ve been a killer and could cause a lot of accidents - this is definitely Britain's worst pothole."

Dean Dunhill said: "It was wide, so it was very easy to pull my leg in and out of the hole.

"I was very shocked at how deep it was as it's very dangerous - I think there needs to be more done to keep the roads in good condition."

East Riding Council claim they are working on repairing the pothole, and hope it will be fixed by Thursday.

It was allegedly caused by a collapsed surface water culvert.

The sorry state of Britain's roads continues to be a problem for motorists, with thousands of miles of highway affected by potholes.

Earlier this month, Manchester council boss, Sir Richard Leese, claimed Brits needed to "drive more carefully" to avoid damage to their cars caused by dodgy road surfaces.
