AROUND a quarter of British drivers could be risking a heavy penalty for having sex while out on the road.
Just over 25 per cent of motorists have admitted to performing a sex act while driving, according to a recent study.
Conducted by , the study found that a whopping 49 per cent of drivers admitted to having sex in their car, with the majority having done it more than once.
But stats showing where drivers were doing the deed were even more alarming.
While 75 per cent were only performing the act while their car was parked on public or private land, just over a quarter admitted to fooling around while actually on the road.
Those motorists are risking a serious penalty if caught by police.
Performing a sex act while driving can lead to a careless driving charge, which would see you fined £100 and receive three penalty points.
But it is more likely the case would go to court, where drivers can receive a maximum £2,500 fine and nine points.
And if police deem the case to be more serious, they think your actions were a risk to road users, or you cause an accident while having sex, you could be slapped with a dangerous driving charge.
Dangerous driving can see you given an unlimited fine, a hefty driving ban and even up to two years in prison.
The study also revealed the drivers most likely to misbehave in their cars.
Surprisingly, young motorists were the least likely to have sex in the car, while 35-44 year olds were the most adventurous.
Norwich also emerged as the car sex capital of the UK, with around 60 per cent admitting to the deed - and one in five saying they had done it more than 20 times in the Norfolk city.
The road laws you need to know
Simon England, Managing Director at ALA, said: “As there is no singular law to give guidance to UK drivers around having sex in a car, we thought it would be interesting to find out the attitudes and experiences of the British public in this matter.
“Whilst most UK drivers have been indulging their needs in a safely parked vehicle, we were shocked to find out that 25 percent of drivers admitted to engaging in sexual activity whilst driving.
“With this level of distraction occurring whilst driving, there is a real danger of damage to both their own vehicles and to other motorists.
“Risking a charge of driving without due care or attention or dangerous driving could result in a fine and penalty points or disqualification and even a prison sentence, which can have a significant impact on the price of your insurance.”
