You could save more than £1,000 a year just by sharing a lift to work

Car sharers could dramatically slash the cost of their daily commute - and it could even help to reduce the nation's congestion problem

BRITISH drivers could save more than £1,000 just by sharing a lift to work.

Around 18.6million Brits currently drive to work alone, seeing them fork out an average of £1,700 a year in running costs.

But according to a recent study, motorists could more than halve their commuting bill by joining a car share.

Conducted by , the study found that drivers who shared their commute with another three Brits just three days each week could save an average of £791 each over the course of the year - with that rising to more than £1,000 in certain parts of the UK.

And even those who shared just twice a week would save more than £500 over 12 months.

Belfast was the city where motorists stood to save the most by car sharing, up to £1,200 in some cases.

Cities where drivers were forced to fork out the most to commute alone were the locations that saw the biggest savings, with Plymouth and London also far cheaper to car share in.

An estimated 12.3million motorists currently car share around the UK.

Drivers are able to link up with others commuting to the same or similar areas via the sharing platforms, and arrange lifts to suit them.

Car sharing could also help to reduce the nation's congestion problem, drastically cutting down the number of cars on the road.
This would also see a fall in pollution levels around major cities.

Dan Goodfellow from Inchcape said: “Although it might not be a viable option for people to car share every day, taking it in turns and making a small effort even a couple of times a week by creating a timetable with colleagues, friends and family, can have a huge financial and environmental impact.”

Ali Clabburn, CEO of the UK’s biggest car share community, Liftshare.com said: “Our average member who car shares regularly, typically 4 days a week, saves about £1000 per year, depending on fuel prices.

“In fact, if half of UK motorist’s car shared just one day a week, not only would they save money but congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10 per cent and traffic jams by 20 per cent.”
