IF YOU drive over this road in the Netherlands and stay at the speed limit, the road will sing to you.

And as magical as that might sound, local residents aren't happy about it at all.

Located near the Dutch village of Jelsum and Leeuwarden, the highway recently had "rumble strips" installed in certain sections to make the straight drive a bit more interesting.

When a car drives over the strips at the 40mph speed limit, the highway sings out the regional anthem of Friesland.

But the novelty for Jelsum locals has already warn off, and they want the asphalt instrument gone.

The sound allegedly travels right through the village, and the continuous droning is keeping residents awake at night.

One local resident : "Last Saturday night the taxis were driving from Leeuwarden to Stiens and on the way back, they tried to go across the lines as quickly as possible and we had the anthem playing all night at high speed."

According to reports, the local council has now agreed to remove the sound strips from the highway.

And the Jelsum road isn't the first to bang out a tune - or the first one to irritate locals.

A special stretch of motorway in California is set up to play Gioachino Rossini's "William Tell Overture", having been created as a marketing stunt by Honda back in 2008.

The novelty motorway was originally used to create a video that showed Honda Civics playing The Lone Ranger theme tune, but when it was left in place, it started driving residents mad.

When it was first constructed, one angry resident said: "Why don't I come to your house at 3 a.m. and butcher the 'William Tell Overture' and see how you like it."

And despite a number of complaints, the road still remains in place almost a decade later.

Another stretch of highway in New Mexico plays the tune of "America the Beautiful" by Annie Karto when drivers slow down to 45mph.

But according to some reports, it has now gone out of tune.
