IT'S one of the most hotly contested questions in the battle of the sexes, so do men or women really make better drivers?
According to two expert driving instructors, there's no contest - women are far better behind the wheel.
Husband and wife duo Gaynor and Noel Gaughan have spent years teaching Britain's new drivers, and have even helped Adele, One Direction star Niall Horan and supermodel Lara Stone pass their tests.
They claim that in their experience, female motorists are more skilled in the driver's seat - and it comes down to putting more effort in.
According to data from Leasing Options, women have performed better in their theory test every year since 1996, while men have generally done better in their practical test.
But while men are more confident on the road, they dominate statistics for traffic offences, accidents and deaths.
Tips to help you pass your driving test the first time
- Focus on passing your theory test quickly, as it takes the pressure off the rest of your learning experience
- Be sure to pick the right study material and instructor. Only use "Goverment approved" books and instructional DVDs, and make sure your instructor is graded by the DVSA
- Have a lesson plan and schedule. Try to have lessons on a weekly basis, and incorporate them into your normal routine
- Be confident. Make sure you know the driving syllabus and trust in your own abilities
Driving instructor, Noel Gaughan, said: “It’s an old cliche but, for some reason, male learners seem to pick up manoeuvres and parking easier than women.
"However, lately we have noticed a change in this, with an increasing number of female learners showing an interest in cars and picking up the practical aspects of driving just as quickly - and we have always found that female drivers are more studious.
“I’ve always felt that women make better drivers. In my experience they are more aware of what is around them and they work harder on the theory test.
"When it comes to the driving test, confidence can be an important factor and I have often found that male learners tend to be more confident - but that doesn’t mean I’d be as confident leaving my own car keys with them."
Driving instructor, Gaynor Gaughan, said: “I’ve found that female learners have always been quicker at incorporating the knowledge and theory side than male customers, though the most important thing is that people are open to learning."

The pair also provided some tips to help young drivers breeze though their practical test on the first attempt.
Along with picking the right learning materials and instructor, they claimed that making a driving lesson part of your regular routine could help you improve quickly as a driver.
And according to the instructors, confidence is the key ingredient for any motorist.
