POTHOLES caused nearly £1billion of damage to vehicles in the past year, a study found.
The bill is up 34 per cent on the £684million of two years ago.
Seven in ten drivers said they hit a pothole a week. A quarter ride over one every day.
It left 8.2million people with damaged cars in the past two years.
Motorists in the North West were worst affected, the Kwik Fit survey of 2,000 people said.
A separate report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance found one in five local roads are structurally poor. It is a 20 per cent rise on a year ago.

The condition of the road network is having an impact on driver behaviour, some aspects of which are likely to make the situation even worse.
One in eight drivers drive a longer route than the most direct journey as it has better road surfaces, adding unnecessary wear and tear to both road and vehicles, as well as using extra fuel.
