THE cost of hailing a cab is on the rise around the UK - and some cities could see you paying way over the odds.
New data has revealed the locations around Britain that charge the most for a taxi - and it's not London.
Private number plate specialists, Regtransfers.co.uk, analysed data from local authorities to find the average cost of a taxi per mile in the UK's major cities.
The study found that Coventry was the most expensive location to hail a ride at an average £3.11 per mile - around 45 per cent more than the best fares.
Cab passengers in the West Midlands city were forced to pay an extra £0.96 per mile than those in Liverpool, which proved to be Britain's cheapest city.
Coventry is the home of the black cab, with the London Taxi Company based there for almost 100 years - making it even more surprising it's number one.
Many would expect to see the capital with soaring fares, but London didn't even feature in the top three most expensive locations.
Taxi users in London can expect to pay an average of £2.99 per mile, which ranks fifth on the list below Leeds, Oxford and Cambridge.
As for the cheapest locations, Brits will have to travel up north for the best prices.
While the average cost in Liverpool is £2.15 per mile, Edinburgh comes in a close second at just £2.22.

Taxis in Brighton are also among the cheapest in the country, with drivers charging around £2.28 per mile.
According to the study, the number of licensed taxi vehicles and drivers reached record levels in 2017.
The number of registered cabs in the UK increased by 16 per cent to 281,000, which was the highest number in more than a decade.
