Legendary 1990s Subaru rally car with iconic blue and yellow livery to sell for £140,000 at auction
The Subaru Legacy is one of the brand's most iconic rally cars and was driven by Richard Burns and Ari Vatanen in the early 1990s. The historic rally star is now heading to auction
A LEGENDARY 1993 Subaru rally car has emerged for sale with an estimated value of up to £140,000.
The Legacy RS Group A was once raced by the late British rally legend Richard Burns and Finnish star driver Ari Vatanen.
It led the 1993 Acropolis Rally at the hands of Vatanen, while Burns raced it to a second-place finish at the 1995 Bettega Memorial Rallysprint in Italy.
Most recognisable is the iconic blue and yellow Subaru livery on the paintwork, identifying the car as a true rallying classic.
The Legacy underwent a complete overhaul to return it to its original condition with the entire shell replaced after a collector picked it up in 2008.
But it does still contain largely original mechanical components, with the correct ‘works’ engine, 6-speed gearbox and suspension set-up.
At its peak, the Legacy's 2.0-litre turbo engine produced 290bhp, with all that power being distributed to all four wheels through an "X-Trac'" manual gearbox.
Since its 2008 rebuild, the motor has covered a measly 62 miles.
Once part of the Prodrive motorsport group, the rejuvenated rally veteran has now been acquired by Silverstone Auctions.
It will now go under the hammer at Silverstone Auctions' Race Retro Competition Car Sale on February 23, with a guide price in the range of £120,000-£140,000.
Joe Watts, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, said: “We’re thrilled that this Subaru Legacy RS Group A rally car driven by Ari Vatanen and Richard Burns among others is now available for new ownership.
“Vatanen and Burns are among rally motorsport’s pantheon of all-time greats, so we expect some intense bidding when it goes under the hammer.”
