BUYERS can net huge savings on new diesels as dealers look to offload cars ahead of potential Budget tax hikes.

The toxic fuel has come underfire with a string of charges on parking and driving in cities - plus a future ban.

And Chancellor Philip Hammond is even considering increasing fuel duty and placing extra taxes on diesels.

That's prompted car salesmen to offer cut price deals on new diesels that are as much as 25 per cent better than petrol equivalents.

The average saving on a new diesel is £2,716 compared to £2,162 on a new petrol, according to What Car? figures.

Savvy buyers can negotiate even bigger savings on high volume cars like SUVs and superminis.

And Volkswagen diesels - which have taken a pounding in the wake of Dieselgate - top the list of biggest diesel discounts.

The unpopular VW Jetta can be had with 25 per cent off - a saving of £6,110 off its list price.

Buyers can also get behind the wheel of the Golf SV and Passat with similar big money savings.

By contrast, the biggest discount on any petrol model is 23 per cent off a Fiat Panda.

What Car? could find no other petrol models where buyers could negotiate more than 20 per cent off.

Claire Evans, consumer editor at What Car?, said: "The dramatic rise in discounts is a direct response to a slump in demand caused by the Government's demonisation of diesels and a lack of understanding from consumers of the new cleaner ‘Euro 6’ diesels now available.

"It’s a perfect storm."

Industry figures reveal the sale of new diesel cars has fallen by 20 per cent in recent months as buyers steer clear.
