Is a built-in TOASTER the optional extra every car needs? Jamie Oliver’s bespoke Land Rover is a ‘kitchen on wheels’

WHEN you think of optional car extras, touch-screen infotainment, wifi hotspot and reversing camera spring to mind.
But Jaguar Land Rover's latest project has thrown a rather unconventional spanner in the mix - an inbuilt toaster.
As part of their collaborative effort with global chef Jamie Oliver, the British manufacturer have created a bespoke Discovery SUV kitted out with everything you need to create the ultimate kitchen on wheels.
Included in list of some of the more unusual features is a two-slice toaster, positioned conveniently next to the driver's seat.
While it sounds crazy at first, is a toaster in your car the optional extra the world never knew we needed until now?
It may seem like the ultimate time-saver for the morning rush, but in reality it is probably more hassle than it's worth.
Sure, being able to cook up your early morning crust on the road sounds like dream, but buttering it may pose a problem... and what about the crumbs?
For the millionaire chef, maybe Land Rover will provide him with his own toast butterer for his morning journeys.
But for us mere mortals, plain toast is the rather less appealing option.
Jamie's pristine road kitchen threatens to transform into a graveyard of crusty remnants - and a meeting place for the local ant colony.
So for now, we are happy for this feature to stay in the "one-of-a-kind" category.
For the king of the kitchen, the rest of the bespoke vehicle is like his royal carriage.
Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team built the Discovery from scratch, based on vision from Oliver himself.
Sliding out from the boot, the car has its own fold-out work top, fitted with a sink, two gas hobs, spice rack and fold-out TV screen.
The Discovery's 2,500 litres of luggage space has also been decorated with a living herb garden in the rear windows, as well as oil and vinegar dispensers mounted in the tailgate.
Most impressive, however, are the unique built-in features scattered around the rest of the motor.
On top of a hidden jam store and a slow-cooker fitted in the engine bay, it also has butter churners mounted on three of its alloy wheels, and an ice cream maker on the fourth - meaning Jamie can prepare his ingredients while he is on the road.
Jamie Oliver said: “I gave Land Rover a massive challenge to create the ultimate kitchen on wheels.
"I dreamt big and asked for a lot, and what they’ve done has blown my mind. I didn’t think they’d actually be able to put a slow-cooker next to the engine and an olive oil dispenser in the boot, but they did.
"The result is an amazing Discovery, tailored perfectly for me and the family – we love it.
"This unique creation means we can take our culinary adventures to the next level.”
In addition to the built-in features, Oliver's car also comes with a front-mounted rotisserie cooker and a Land Rover inspired BBQ encased within a standard 25-litre jerry can.
David Fairbairn, Head of Bespoke at SVO, said: “As a team, we never imagined we would be asked to produce wheels that churn butter so it has been great fun working alongside Jamie to bring his vision to life.
"He really wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible with this versatile vehicle and the team fully embraced the challenge.
“Discovery helps our customers make every day an adventure, and this special vehicle will give Jamie and his family the chance to cook amazing meals anywhere they want to."
The creation of the car will be featured on Jamie Oliver's YouTube channel in a three-part series, starting Thursday October 5.
