FORD has introduced a petrol and diesel scrappage scheme to rid British roads of old polluting cars and vans.

The UK's biggest selling firm is offering up to £7,000 off new models in return for scrapping toxic cars registered before December 2009.

And unlike trade-in deals brought in by Mercedes, Volkswagen and BMW, Ford will guarantee to scrap the car so the dirty car won't find its way back onto the road.

Owners can get rid of any pre-Euro 5 diesel or petrol car of any make and model in return for cash off a brand new, Euro 6 Fiesta, Focus or Transit.

The deal also extends to the B-Max, C-Max and Kuga although the Mondeo, Galaxy and Edge are excluded.

The scheme will run from September 1 to December 31 2017 with scrapped vehicles having to be registered with the current owner for at least 90 days.

A base £2,000 is offered as a scrappage incentive with a variable extra saving provided by Ford depending on your choice.

Ford has introduced the scrappage scheme with one eye on the 2040 petrol and diesel ban planned by the government.

The government had been expected to introduce a nationwide diesel scrappage scheme but it now seems like manufacturers may have to fund it themselves.

Ford bosses are expecting thousands to take up the new deal although that's just a fraction of the 19million UK drivers who are eligible.

If all these were taken off the roads, CO2 emissions would fall by 15million tons a year - equal to the output of three coal-fired power stations.

Andy Barratt, chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain, said: "We are committed to this and that's why it's a true scrappage scheme and not just a trade-in.

"Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate positive effect on air quality, and this Ford scrappage scheme aims to do just that.

"Acting together we can take hundreds of thousands of the dirtiest cars off our roads and out of our cities.";

currently offers a similar £2,000 scrappage scheme - extending it beyond its original June cut-off date - with cash off most of its range in return for ditching your old motor.
