Mercedes announces toxic diesel trade-in scheme with £2,000 off a new, cleaner model

MERCEDES has revealed the details of its dirty diesel trade-in scheme offering buyers a cut-price deal on a new model.

UK drivers can net £2,000 off a new Euro 6 diesel, pure electric or plug-in hybrid when they trade in their old car.

Any diesels made between 1992 and 2010 are eligible for trade-in as long as you've owned the car - regardless of brand - for longer than six months.

The scheme runs until December 31 while registration and estimated delivery of the new model must be between August 2 2017 and March 31 2018.

It mirrors a similar scheme introduced last week by BMW with VW expected to follow suit, too.

BMW announced its "lower emissions allowance" offering £2,000 off cars with CO2 ratings of less than 130g/km when an owner traded in their diesel Euro 4.

Volkswagen has a similar offer running in Germany and confirmed it would roll it out in the UK but no details have announced yet.

The Mercedes offer also includes £1,000 offer Smart Electric Drive models if you can't stump up the cash for a luxury Merc.

For plug-in models, the manufacturer discount can be added to the £4,500 government grant.

Owners of Euro 4 diesels will receive a straight trade-in price while those with older Euro 1, 2 and 3 diesels will be offered compensation for it to be scrapped after its value is assessed.

The incentive schemes follow widespread recalls on millions of diesel models by Mercedes, BMW, VW and Audi across Europe.

Software tweaks will be applied to the diesel engines during the free of charge update to lower toxic emissions.
